Since 1998, the Department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery has separated from the Department of Surgery, although general thoracic surgery & open heart surgery had been done from 1982 as a division of Departmet of Surgery. Now five faculty members are participated in operations, teaching and research. Area of interests covers lung cancer surgery, adult cardiac surgery, aorta and peripheral artery and vein surgery, and pediatric cardiac surgery. And all the rest area of general thoracic surgery is also included, such as surgery for esophagus, trachea, diaphragm, mediastinum and pleura etc.

Our department supports the Medical School’s educational mission through several programs, such as the Introduction to Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery, the practical training of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery, postgraduate course, and Team teaching with cardiology, pulmonary department, and Gastrointestinal department.

Our faculty participate in a wide range of basic research in addition to clinical study such as anticarcification of xenograft by pf. Jae-Ho Ahn, artificial heart and VAD system by pf. Tae-Hee Won, xenotransplantation and pulmonary hypertension by pf. Kwan-Chang Kim.
