Welcome to the Department of Neurology

Dr. Choi, Kyoung – Gyu, MD, PhD, the first neurologist to be trained in Korea, joined the Ewha Womans Univ. medical center in 1986 and tended to patients and taught lectures at the medical school. In 1990, Dr. Park, Kee–Duk, MD, PhD joined the medical center, and in 1993, when Dr. Choi, K. G. returned after staying at the University of Minnesota as a visiting professor, the department of neurology was officially established as a separate department. Dr. Choi, K. G. has served as Medical Research Center director, head of the Ewha Womans University medical center office of planning and coordination, Medical school research co-director, and currently serves as the head of the planning office for the Seoul Yangchun Medical center. Dr. Park, K. D. served as the chair of the neurology department at the Dongdaemun Ewha Womans University hospital and currently is the director and chair of the neurology department at the Mokdong Ewha Woman’s University hospital. Dr. Kim, Yong Jae, MD, PhD, Dr. Choi, Byung-Ok, MD, PhD, Dr. Lee, Hyang Woon, MD, PhD, and Dr. Jeong, Jee Hyang joined the department in 1998, 2003, 2003, and 2005, respectively.

Education and Research

The neurology department is in charge of the following subjects in the medical school curriculum: ‘Introduction to Clinical Medicine’ for 1st and 2nd year students, ‘Structure and function of the Neurologic system’ for 1st year students, ‘Neurology/Psychiatry’ for 2nd year student and clinical rounds for 3rd and 4th year students. Current research topics include studies on degenerative brain diseases lead by Dr. Choi, Kyoung–Gyu, studies on peripheral nervous system disorders and musculoskeletal disorders lead by Dr. Park, Kee–Duk. Dr. Kim, Yong-Jae specializes in cerebrovascular stroke and headache disorders, with emphasis on Doppler sonography and metabolic syndrome and causative effect. Dr. Choi, Byung-Ok is conducting research on molecular genetics and development of new diagnostic methods, especially to treat neuropathic pain and central vertigo. Dr. Lee, Hyang Woon is conducting research on intractable epilepsy and brain mapping using magnetic stimulation as well as sleep physiology. Dr. Jeong, Jee Hyang is conducting research on use of MRI in neurodegenerative disorders and cognitive behavioral neurology, and gender specific differences in neurodegenerative disorders.
