Ewha Enters the Top 200 in 12 Subjects in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025
Ewha Enters the Top 200 in 12 Subjects in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 On Wednesday, March 12, the global university ranking organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) released the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. In the ranking, Ewha University achieved significant progress with 12 academic subjects placed among the world’s top 200. This marks the addition of seven subjects to the list compared to the previous year, showcasing Ewha's outstanding research capabilities and academic excellence on the international stage. Ewha demonstrated remarkable academic excellence in this year’s QS rankings, earning a spot within the global top 100 in four subjects. The university was ranked in the 51-100 range for Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies, Nursing, and Library and Information; and Education and Training, in particular, achieved an impressive 63rd place, securing a strong standing within the top 100. In addition, Ewha made it into the 101-200 range for a total of eight subjects; the 101-150 range for five subjects, consisting of Art and Design, English Language and Literature, Linguistics, Modern Languages, and Social Policy and Administration; and the 151-200 range for three subjects, consisting of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Communication and Media Studies, and Sociology. The rankings signify a recognition of Ewha’s academic excellence across various disciplines. This achievement reflects the success of Ewha's strategic support policies for promising academic fields, further enhancing its international reputation as a research-intensive university. Based on its global recognition for such varied disciplines, Ewha has strengthened the foundation for fostering talented individuals with a global competitive edge. Building on this success, Ewha plans to strengthen its global competitiveness by creating a world-class research environment and establishing “first-mover research leadership.” Furthermore, the university aims to actively expand international joint research and academic collaborations, promote interdisciplinary and convergent research encompassing various academic fields at Ewha, and realize the vision of “Ewha Leading the Era of Great Transformation through Inclusive Innovation.” Through these efforts, Ewha will further solidify its position as a research-oriented university.
100th Anniversary Performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by the Division of English Language and Literature
100th Anniversary Performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by the Division of English Language and Literature To commemorate the centennial of the Division of English Language and Literature, a special performance of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was held from March 6 (Thu.) to March 8 (Sat.) at the ECC Youngsan Theater. Rooted in Ewha Haktang’s humanities program of 1910, the division was established as an independent department in 1925 with the founding of Ewha College, since serving as a key pillar of Ewha’s academic tradition over the past century. To celebrate its centennial, the division hosted the 100th Anniversary International Academic Conference last October and has planned a series of commemorative events, beginning with this theatrical production. This production was a collaborative effort involving both alumnae and current students, led by BEINGS, the division’s English-language theater group. BEINGS has a distinguished history and legacy in English-language theater, having staged Korea’s first English-language play, Ivanhoe, in 1930 and Shakespeare’s The Tempest in 1986 to mark Ewha Womans University’s centennial. This year’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, often cited as one of Shakespeare’s top five plays, was a modern reimagining interpreted through the lens of year 2025. Professor Tae Kyeong Kang from the Division of English Language and Literature, who served as the performance coordinator, described it as “a song of the search for harmony amidst the great turmoil of strife and animosity in the human realm, juxtaposed against discord and conflict in the realm of nature, and a cyclical dance weaving together life and theater.” This production was a meaningful collaboration that brought together alumnae spanning four decades from the Incoming Classes of 1984 to 2024, with active participation from many BEINGS graduates who are now thriving as professionals in the performing arts sector. Notably, this was the first performance staged at the newly inaugurated Youngsan Theater, which opened last December as a professional performance venue. Located on the fourth basement level of the ECC, Youngsan Theater is equipped with cutting-edge theatrical technology and infrastructure. The venue is expected to enhance the overall viewing experience while providing students with firsthand exposure to a professional theater setting. The centennial celebrations will continue with the 100th Anniversary Joint Exhibition at the ECC Daesan Gallery, co-hosted by the Ewha History Museum and Yeonghakhoe (Alumnae Association of the Division of English Language and Literature), from April 24 to the end of May. On May 23, the Centennial Commemoration Ceremony and a Future Vision Forum will be held to offer an opportunity to reflect on the division’s century-long legacy.
University Health Service Center Relocated and Renovated at the Student Union Building
The University Health Service Center (led by Director Hyesook Park) has relocated to the first floor of the Student Union Building and undergone a complete renovation. With this relocation and renewal, the University Health Service Center is now able to provide health management services with improved accessibility in a more comfortable environment. The relocation has enhanced efficiency by consolidating all services into a single space. In particular, moving from the basement to the ground floor has created a brighter and more comfortable environment. Additionally, the center’s new location in Room 110-2 (formerly the computer lab) on the first floor of the Student Union Building, next to Shinhan Bank, has significantly improved accessibility and ease of use for students, faculty, and staff. Director Park stated, “With the improved accessibility of the University Health Service Center, we expect more members of the Ewha community will begin to use our services. We hope this will provide tangible benefits in health promotion and preventive care.” She added, “Going forward, the center will continue to offer various programs and support to provide even better health management services.” The University Health Service Center was established in April 1956 with the aim to improve the health of the Ewha community through health management, medical care, and health education. For 69 years, it has faithfully served as a guardian of the health of the Ewha family. Currently, the center is equipped to provide health and medical services with a clinic, examination room, pharmacy, health care room, and health education room. It also offers primary care, consultations, a rest area, and various vaccinations—including those for hepatitis, cervical cancer, shingles, and influenza—along with general and student health checkups. In addition, with the recent support of Ewha Womans University Medical Center (EUMC), the University Health Service Center has introduced new blood pressure monitors and body measurement devices while replacing and upgrading its outdated body composition analyzers, thereby further enhancing the quality of its medical services. The University Health Service Center operates on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and students, faculty, and staff are required to present their student ID or staff ID to use the services. Students enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Program, which is Ewha’s student healthcare service, can access basic medical services such as medical consultations, medication administration, treatments, counseling, and travel clinics with full coverage. Additional services, including diagnostic tests for disease, vaccinations, and the issuance of medical certificates, are available with partial coverage. Appointments for various services can be made online at http://ehealth.ewha.ac.kr/.
College of Music Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary with the “Ewha Giving Thanks” Concerts in the U.S.
Founded in 1925 as Korea’s first music department, the College of Music at Ewha celebrated its centennial with commemorative concerts titled “Ewha Giving Thanks” at Lancaster Methodist Church and Carnegie Hall in New York, from March 1 (Sat.) to 2 (Sun.). Since its establishment in 1925, the College of Music has been at the forefront of change, taking on new challenges such as Gugak (Korean traditional music) education, the training of female musicians, opera productions, and the formation of an orchestra ensemble. In 1950, Professor Kim Ja-Kyung of the Department of Voice became the first Korean to hold a solo recital at Carnegie Hall. The college has continued its record of innovative growth, including the establishment of Korea's first female orchestra. The concerts served as a stage to reflect on the musical achievements of the College of Music over the past 100 years and to pave the way for the next century. On Saturday, March 1, a heartfelt performance unfolded at Lancaster Methodist Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the church that dispatched Alice R. Appenzeller to Korea, the first Westerner born in Korea and the founder of Ewha College. Also the sixth principal of Ewha Haktang, Appenzeller dedicated herself to Ewha through efforts such as fundraising for the establishment and development of the Sinchon campus. It was through her efforts that the College of Music was founded, and this concert was held as a tribute to her devotion. On Sunday, March 2, a special performance took place at Carnegie Hall in New York, a stage of dreams for performers worldwide. The event drew a full house of 600 attendees, including alumnae and supporters from the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University (IFEWU) and across the U.S. The College of Music donated the entire proceeds from the Carnegie Hall performance to Lancaster Methodist Church and two other New York-based organizations: I Have a Dream, an educational group offering hope to marginalized communities, and Education Through Music, an organization focused on providing music education to underprivileged groups, thereby practicing Ewha’s spirit of sharing and service. In addition, to commemorate the founding of Ewha, the College of Music will hold the “100th Anniversary Concert of the College of Music,” featuring all of its departments, on Wednesday, May 21 at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall. In addition to the concert, the college plans to organize a series of special and enriching centennial events to celebrate this milestone.
2025 Matriculation Ceremony and “Welcome to Ewha” Event Held for New Students
On Friday, February 28, at 10 AM, Ewha held the 2025 matriculation ceremony at Welch-Ryang Auditorium to welcome a total of 3,819 new students. In her address, President Hyang-Sook Lee congratulated the new students on embarking on their new journey at Ewha and remarked, “As a leading institution for nurturing global women leaders, Ewha is committed to fostering your growth into individuals with outstanding talents.” She announced that, in line with the vision of “Leading the Era of Great Transformation through Inclusive Innovation,” Ewha plans to build a future-oriented Ewha-specific education model, provide AI training programs tailored to each discipline such as the “AI 4 All Ewha” program, promote human-centric values, and spearhead changes. President Lee encouraged the incoming students to dream big as they prepare for the future, while taking on and overcoming challenges with heartfelt faith in the Ewha Spirit. The ceremony proceeded with the introduction of key faculty members, a musical performance by the Ewha Brass Ensemble, and a special choral performance by the Ewha male professors’ choir. Student representatives Gyu-won Kim from the College of Pharmacy and Nguyen Le Bao Tran, an Ewha Global Partnership Program (EGPP) scholarship recipient from the College of Business Administration, delivered speeches on behalf of the Incoming Class of 2025, expressing their aspirations to thrive as members of Ewha Womans University. The event concluded with the singing of the school anthem and a benediction. Following the matriculation ceremony, new students attended “Welcome to Ewha,” a talk-show- style event designed to help them adapt to university life. To commemorate the occasion, the Office of Student Affairs distributed welcome kits to the Incoming Class of 2025, featuring a specially-designed snake plush toy, the I@EWHA guidebook, and various souvenirs.
2024 Ewha Winter Volunteers Embody Ewha’s Spirit of Sharing and Service
The 2024 Ewha Winter Volunteers have returned after engaging in volunteer activities during the winter break across various destinations at home and abroad, putting Ewha’s spirit of sharing and service into action. A total of 128 members of the Domestic Education Volunteer Team were dispatched to 21 institutions nationwide for two separate sessions, each lasting five days, from January 6 (Mon.) to 10 (Fri.) and from January 13 (Mon.) to 17 (Fri.). The volunteers conducted educational programs, which were developed by the Volunteers Program Planning Team for younger children and adolescents at elementary schools and community centers for children and youths, focusing on their physical, mental, and social well-being. In addition, they provided team-specific programs on topics such as the climate crisis, green growth, and artificial intelligence. Their activities also included arts and sports sessions, academic tutoring, and mentoring. The Overseas Education Volunteer Team visited the Ewha Social Services Center located in the Pochentong district of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, for nine days from January 18 (Sat.) to 26 (Sun.), carrying out educational programs on personal hygiene and health. The Ewha Social Services Center in Cambodia was established in 2012 as the first overseas social services center of any South Korean university, with the aim of practicing the Ewha values of service and sharing while making contributions to society. Ewha implements the values of sharing and service based on Christian values in real-world settings through a variety of volunteer programs, ensuring that Ewha students grow into leaders who will promote a more inclusive society. Since sending its first volunteer team in 2000, the Ewha Volunteer Team has selected volunteers among Ewha students to engage in activities across various regions both domestically and internationally during the summer and winter vacations each year. Through over 20 years of dedicated practice and service, the Ewha Volunteer Team received the Presidential Citation at the Seventh National Rural Talent Sharing Awards in 2022, while the 2024 Ewha Summer Winter Volunteers’ activities in Cambodia were selected as an “Outstanding Overseas Volunteer Program Developed by Universities” organized by the Korean University Council for Social Service (KUCSS), thereby widely promoting Ewha’s values of sharing and service.
