Welcome to the Department of General Surgery

Department of surgery is a major clinical department of the Ewha Womans University College of Medicine.

Our missions are education of surgical trainees and medical students, research for surgical technique development and disease treatment and providing evolutionary, up-to-date surgical care to the patients such as transplantation, surgical oncology and minimal invasive surgery.

We are specialized into the division of breast surgery, head & neck surgery, hepatic surgery and pancreatico-biliary surgery, gastric surgery, colorectal surgery, transplantation, oncologic surgery, pediatric surgery and emergency care surgery. Most members are skillful in laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

The division of breast surgery performed more than 600 breast cancer surgery a year with outstanding clinical outcome. Also minimal invasive lumpectomy technique and immediate reconstruction by plastic surgery team are specialized filed of the Ewha University Medical Center. The division of colorectal surgery give the skillful treatment such as single port, robotic surgery and cytoreductive surgery and heated chemotherapy (HIPEC). Also they can provide emergency care for the acute gastrointestinal diseases and basic research about colon cancer. The surgeons of the division of the gastric surgery lead the trend of minimally invasive surgery for gastric cancer, bariatric and metabolic surgery in Korea. The hepato-pancreato-biliary team can offer minimally invasive surgery to the patients who have both malignant and benign disease. The division of transplantation is most outstanding field of our department being an authority in Korea within shortest period.

Our research spans both clinical and experimental area. We conduct or participate in clinical trials and join collaborative research centers. Basic research-such as cancer biology (breast, colon and gastric cancer), stem cell (colon and breast cancer) or vesicle (breast and gastric cancer) accelerates the therapeutic discovery based on mechanism of disease in addition to clinical research-such as surgical outcome according to technique.

We have education programs for medical students, graduate students, resident trainee and clinical fellows. Scientific symposiums and special events for patients and medical personnel are periodically opened every year.
