Ewha Womans University College of Medicine was founded in 1945, followed by the Department of Biochemistry in 1948. Since the first lecture by a professor of Severance medical school, Dr. Sang-Min Kim, professors Woon-Ki Back, Hae-Chang Kim, and Jae-Hyun Kim were appointed and lectured for the Department of Biochemistry. Professor Young-Sook Hong started her first year in 1971 as a full-time lecturer, and retired as a professor in February 2005. Professor Nak-Eung Sung joined the department in 1977, researching on lipid metabolism and nutrition. He has serviced the school as a Director of Education and a Dean of College of Medicine until his retirement in August 1990. Professor Hae-Young Park joined in 1992. professor Hyung-Lae Kim joined in 1995, professor Sung-Chul Jung joined in 2004, professor Jung-Hyuck Ahn joined in 2009, and professor Joo-Won Park joined in 2012.

Department of Biochemistry is performing the medical school’s educational mission with lectures and experiment classes regarding cell biology, molecular biology, and human genetics.

Our faculties are doing a leading role on a variety of biomedical fields; professor Hae-Young Park is investigating on the tumor pathogenesis and tumor cell apoptosis mechanism. Professor Hyung-Lae Kim is focusing on the genomics of complex trait disease, and the molecular mechanism of toxic substances on endocrine system. Professor Sung-Chul Jung is elucidating the genetic mechanism of genetic diseases and inherited metabolic disorders, and is developing molecular therapy. Professor Jung-Hyuck Ahn aims to understand the role of phosphorylation events in brain, and the mechanism of neurological disorders. Professor Joo-Won Park is focusing on biochemistry of lipids.
